PCA-SAR Art Car World Tour to Douglas, AZ Saturday February 25 and Optional Overnight Stay at The Gadsden Hotel
Registration is now open (http://www.pcasar.motorsportreg.com/) so please come along for the PCA-SAR tour on Saturday February 25 for a taste of The Old West through scenic Southern Arizona and also see the amazing automotive creations at Art Car World in Douglas, AZ. This scenic drive includes a tour of the jail in the ghost town of Gleeson and a visit to Art Car World. Art Car World, owned by Harrod Blank, one of the prime movers and shakers in the counter-culture art car scene, is a museum of art cars. These are the vehicles of artistically inspired people who use them as their canvas and decorate them in very interesting, and sometimes bizarre ways that is always thought-provoking and fun to see. Click on these links for Art Car World and the Gleeson Jail.
Here’s a rundown of the itinerary:
- The Tucson group will meet in the parking lot at the Triple T Truck Stop located at Craycroft and I-10. From there, it’s about a 1-hour drive to Tombstone via I-10 & Hwy 80 where we’ll meet the more-Southern members of our SAR region from Sierra Vista. We’ll have a pit stop at Allen St. & 6th St where there is a parking lot and public restrooms.
- From Tombstone we’ll take the very scenic routeon Gleeson Road to the old mining ghost town of Gleeson. We’ll drive by the cemetery and stop at the old jail house for a tour of the museum inside. Abandoned mines are visible from the road.
- After leaving the jail, Gleeson Road takes us right into Hwy 191 near Elfrida where we’ll continue south into Douglas. The total trip time to Douglas from Tucson is about 3 hours.
- We’ll have lunch in Douglas at the Casa Segovia restaurant located in The Gadsden Hotel just off the spectacular lobby. A limited menu has been designed for us with a good variety of options.
- The main attraction of this tour is the museum of fascinating vehicles at Art Car World. After lunch we will watch an hour-long movie, Wild Wheels, that Harrod produced about Art Cars with interviews of the artists who created them. After the movie, he will guide a tour of the museum and explain the story behind the amazing cars in this collection. It is advised to bring along a sweater for the tour as the inside of the facility is considerably cooler than the outside temperature.
- And as a nice closing activity, after the museum tour we can refresh ourselves with a tasty shake at a patio shop just a couple doors away.
From this point on, everyone is on their own time. To relax in Douglas and have an enjoyable trip back to Tucson (perhaps via Bisbee) on Sunday, The Gadsden Hotel is offering its renovated rooms to our club at a special price of $69 for the night as long as we book at least five rooms. There are only 17 rooms available, however, so sign up quickly on motorsportreg.com to purchase your place on the Art Car World tour and contact The Gadsden Hotel to reserve your room.
We hope to have a good turnout for this event as it encompasses the authentic and unique history of the Old West in our home state of Arizona and also features the wildly interesting contemporary creations found at Art Car World!
